Lambert & Fils is a Montreal studio, founded in 2010, and everything they sell is assembled by hand in the atelier a few streets off Beaubien. Hand assembly is unusual enough on its own. The useful part on a project is the second half: because the pieces are built to order in-house rather than pulled off a container, a collection can be sized, lengthened or reconfigured for the room instead of the room being planned around a catalogue length.

They also run the studio as a platform for other designers, so the collections don’t all sound like one person. Three we specify most.

Laurent Collection

Laurent is the milk globe, reduced to the argument between a circle and a sphere. Thin brass forms cut through the glass, and because they combine in more or less endless patterns, a Laurent installation can run as one pendant over a table or as a field of them across a lobby ceiling and still read as the same idea.

Silo Collection

Silo is the one people notice. Curves that shape the light around themselves rather than pushing it straight down, so it does something in a room a downlight can’t.

Custom aluminium extrusions carry it, and it throws light up and down at once, so one run handles the ceiling and the table under it.

Beaubien Atelier Collection

Beaubien Atelier is the vertical one, drawn from a waterfall and a weeping willow. It hangs long. That makes it the answer to a stairwell or a two-storey lobby where the eye has nothing to land on between floors.

Hung in a group at staggered heights it stops reading as a fixture and starts reading as a piece of the architecture, which is usually the point of specifying it.

Isle Collection

An ode to quiet strength, Isle is a play both on illusion and perception allowing lightness to anchor and foundations to rise. Composed of a delicate glass tube resting on solid-stone and aluminum pedestals and suspended in mid-air like a surreal bridge, Isle is minimal, but never simplistic.
