Made in France, and made to order

Designheure has been building lighting in France since 2005, and very little of it comes off a shelf. The model is made-to-order: a designer brings a shape, a diameter, a fabric, and the workshop builds that one. What makes it workable on a real project is how quickly they turn one around, which isn’t how most made-to-order lighting behaves.

Fabric and light, not metal and light

Their pieces are shades — large ones, often with a cut or a slot that throws light in one direction and holds it back in another. That puts them in rooms where a hard-edged fixture reads as wrong: a hotel lounge, a boardroom that wants softening, a stair with too much echo in it. New collections land every year and they stay simple, which is harder than it sounds when the whole product is a silhouette.

What to ask them for

Ask for a size that isn’t in the catalogue. That’s the point of the line, and the answer is usually yes. Bring the ceiling height and the sightline you are protecting and they will work back from it.
