A lighting company usually starts with a factory and goes looking for designs. ANDlight started the other way round. Caine Heintzman, Matt Davis and Lukas Peet set it up in Vancouver in 2013 as somewhere to put their own work into production, and the catalogue still reads more like a portfolio than a range.

Fixtures that also absorb sound

Several of the pieces do a second job while they are up there. The felt on a Volume pendant absorbs sound as well as softening the light, which counts for something in the rooms these fixtures tend to hang in — a lobby with a hard floor, an open office, a restaurant where every surface throws sound back. One pendant won’t fix a room. Enough of them, in a room that was already close, and you can hear the difference.

Where we specify it

On our card ANDlight is what we reach for when a space needs one thing worth looking at and the budget doesn’t run to a commissioned piece. Pipeline builds out of a tube and a connector, so a run gets sized to the ceiling you actually have rather than the one in the catalogue. Button and Slab do the quieter version of the same job. None of it is trying to disappear, which is the point of specifying it.
