62 Sparks is the next site to contribute to Ottawa’s progressive restaurant scene. The design for the space will take visual cues from the existing heritage fabric while introducing a fresh approach to layout and spatial experience. Materials will be both contemporary and timeless, evoking feelings of familiarity and comfort in a space of grandeur. The design celebrates the existing building by using shifting scales to amplify features like the high ceilings while keeping its guests grounded in relaxed and approachable seating. The familiar banking elements will also take on new life as they are reprogrammed to take the users behind the scenes and celebrate the beauty of its original functionality.

The selected lighting types delineate the architectural elements that define the spatial boundaries between work areas, meeting rooms and transitionary zones. Further refinement to the quality of the lighting was made to enhance the material selection and use of space. Open office areas have staggered linear lights orientated perpendicular and in harmony to the long axis of the building. A layered drywall bulkhead provides the transition between the open area and the fully glazed meeting rooms, the seamless Moonline fixture from Flos lighting is placed in close proximity to glazing to emphasize the connection. The Borderline fixture from Delta light frames the pure volume of the elevator lobby with a touchless connection between ceiling, floor and wall planes. In addition to lighting, a fully automated Lutron shading system has been utilized in all the open office areas to maintain the constant seamless look.
The Isabel Bader building (part of Queen’s University) was inspired by the surrounding lake-side landscape. The stainless steel façade was inspired by the water and the monochromatic white/greys of the winter skies. The iconic centre will help to shape the identity of the institution and the region, promoting the Arts and Humanities. FLUX Lighting worked with N45 Architecture to highlight the building’s interior and exterior features with specially selected fixtures, bringing the building to life.
FLUX worked with Chmiel Architects to bring light to the unique Joule space, (the Canadian Medical Association’s newest company). As a new entity, they saw that their headquarters should be a reflection of their corporate brand: cutting edge, innovative and collaborative. The use ALW Moonrings throughout the space as general lighting was an inspired choice and about as far away from the typical 2’x4’ office aesthetic as one could get, giving the space a cool futuristic yet soft vibe. Lighting is used strategically to provide grounding and definition to the various collaborative areas on the floor, and include cylinders, globes and custom coloured orbs throughout.
